What Is a Dental Crown?

When a Filling Isn't Enough

When a tooth is significantly cracked, decayed, or weakened — especially following a root canal — a standard filling can't provide enough structural support. A dental crown completely encases the entire visible portion of the tooth above the gum line, restoring it to its original shape, size, and strength. Think of it as a fitted "helmet" that protects the damaged tooth beneath it.

Common Reasons for a Crown

  • Large cavity too extensive for a filling
  • Cracked or fractured tooth
  • Tooth weakened after root canal therapy
  • Severely worn tooth from grinding (bruxism)
  • Large old filling that is failing or crumbling
  • Deeply discolored or misshapen tooth
  • Final restoration on a dental implant

Same-Day Crowns: Done in One Visit

At Reform Dentistry, we offer same-day crowns using CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and manufacturing) technology. Instead of sending impressions to a lab and waiting 1–2 weeks, your crown is designed on-screen, milled from a premium ceramic block in our office, and seated permanently — all in a single appointment.

One Visit

No second appointment needed. Walk in with a damaged tooth, walk out with a permanent crown.

No Temp Crown

Skip the fragile temporary that can fall off. Your permanent crown is placed the same day.

Digital Scans

No messy impression material. A quick digital scan captures precise measurements of your tooth.

The Crown Process

1

Exam & Treatment Planning

Dr. Al-Douri examines the tooth with X-rays and clinical assessment to confirm a crown is the best option and recommends the right material (ceramic, zirconia) based on the tooth's position and your bite.

2

Tooth Preparation

Under local anesthesia, the tooth is gently shaped to create room for the crown to sit naturally over it without adding bulk. Any decay is removed at this stage.

3

Digital Scan & Design

A digital scan captures the precise shape of your prepared tooth and surrounding teeth. For same-day crowns, this data is used immediately to design your crown on-screen. For lab-made crowns, these records are sent to our premium dental lab.

4

Crown Placement

For same-day crowns, the milled ceramic restoration is fitted, adjusted for bite, and cemented permanently — all the same day. For traditional crowns, a temporary is placed while the lab crown is made, then swapped at your second visit 1–2 weeks later.

Metal-Free Crown Materials

All of our crowns are metal-free and crafted from premium ceramic or zirconia materials. These materials are biocompatible, highly durable, and shade-matched to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth — delivering both strength and aesthetics.

All-Ceramic (Porcelain)

Highest esthetic result — ideal for front teeth. Mimics the translucency of natural enamel perfectly.

Zirconia (BruxZir® style)

Maximum strength — ideal for back molars. Highly resistant to chipping and cracking under chewing forces.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about dental crowns and same-day crowns.

A dental crown (also called a 'cap') is a custom-made restoration that fits completely over a damaged, decayed, or weakened tooth above the gum line. It restores the tooth's original shape, size, strength, and appearance — protecting it from further damage and allowing you to chew normally.

A same-day crown is designed, milled, and placed in your mouth all in a single appointment — typically 1–2 hours. Using CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and manufacturing) technology, we take a digital scan of your tooth, design the crown on-screen, mill it from a solid block of ceramic right in our office, and cement it permanently the same day. No temporary crown, no second visit, no waiting weeks.

With proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits, a high-quality crown can last 10–15 years or significantly longer. Avoiding hard foods like ice, not using your teeth as tools, and wearing a nightguard if you grind your teeth will all help extend the life of your crown.

Absolutely. Our crowns are crafted from premium all-ceramic or zirconia materials that closely mimic the translucency and color of natural enamel. We custom shade-match every crown to your surrounding teeth so it blends in virtually undetectably.

No. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia so you won't feel anything during preparation. You may notice mild sensitivity for a day or two after the appointment as the anesthesia wears off, but this is temporary and easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

A crown is recommended when a tooth has a large cavity too big for a filling, is cracked or fractured, has weakened after a root canal, has a very large old filling that is failing, or is severely discolored or misshapen. In some cases, a crown can completely save a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted.

We offer metal-free all-ceramic and zirconia crowns. Zirconia (like BruxZir) is exceptionally strong and ideal for back molars that take the most chewing force. All-ceramic crowns provide the most natural appearance and are ideal for front teeth. We'll recommend the best material for your specific tooth based on its location and your bite.

Yes. An implant crown is the final restoration placed on top of a dental implant. At Reform Dentistry, Dr. Al-Douri places both the implant and the crown, providing a complete tooth replacement solution from start to finish.

Restore Your Tooth Today

Whether you need a same-day crown or a traditionally crafted restoration, Dr. Al-Douri delivers a precise, comfortable fit and a result that looks and feels completely natural.
