What is a Sinus Lift?
Why the Upper Jaw Presents a Unique Challenge
Dental implants require a strong, dense foundation of jawbone to fuse securely and function like natural teeth. However, replacing missing teeth in the upper back jaw (the premolar and molar areas) presents a unique challenge. The natural bone in this area is generally thinner and softer than in the lower jaw. Compounding this issue are the maxillary sinuses—hollow, air-filled cavities located directly above the upper teeth roots. When teeth are lost in this region, the bone rapidly resorbs (shrinks), leaving only a paper-thin layer of bone separating the mouth from the sinus cavity.
How a Sinus Lift Creates More Space
If an implant were placed without sufficient bone, it could penetrate the sinus cavity or simply fail to anchor securely. A sinus lift, also known as a sinus augmentation, is a highly effective, specialized bone grafting procedure designed to solve this exact problem. During the surgery, our skilled team gently lifts the delicate sinus membrane upward and packs bone grafting material into the space beneath it. This essentially thickens the floor of the sinus, creating a deep, robust foundation of bone.
Precision Planning for a Safe Outcome
At Reform Dentistry, we utilize state-of-the-art 3D imaging to map the exact anatomy of your sinuses and jawbone prior to surgery. This ensures absolute precision and safety during the sinus lift procedure. Over a period of several months, the grafted material seamlessly integrates with your natural bone, providing the perfect, sturdy environment required for placing permanent, lifelike dental implants. Though it requires patience, a sinus lift is the key to unlocking a fully restored smile for patients who have suffered significant bone loss in the upper jaw.

The Sinus Lift Process
3D Imaging and Planning
We take precise 3D scans to measure the current width and height of your bone and evaluate the health and anatomy of your sinus cavity.
Surgical Access
While you are comfortably numb (and sedated, if requested), a small incision is made in the gum tissue where your back teeth used to be to expose the jawbone.
Lifting and Grafting
A small window is opened in the bone, revealing the sinus membrane. This delicate membrane is gently pushed upward, and bone grafting material is packed into the space below it.
Healing and Integration
The gum is stitched closed. Over the next 4 to 9 months, the graft material will fuse with your jawbone, creating a solid foundation ready to support a dental implant.
Do You Need a Sinus Lift?
If you have lost upper back teeth due to extraction, advanced gum disease, or trauma, and have been told you don't have enough bone for implants, a sinus lift is likely the solution. We use advanced imaging to accurately assess your candidacy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about sinus lift surgery.
The upper back jaw has naturally less bone than the lower jaw, and the sinus cavities sit right above it. If you have lost a tooth in this area, the bone quickly shrinks, leaving insufficient depth to securely anchor a dental implant. A sinus lift adds bone to this specific area to ensure the implant will be stable.
While it sounds complex, the procedure is quite routine and generally well-tolerated. We use local anesthesia to ensure you feel no pain during the surgery. Post-operative discomfort is usually mild and manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers.
The initial surgical healing takes about 1 to 2 weeks. However, the newly placed bone grafting material needs several months (typically 4 to 9 months) to fully integrate and fuse with your natural jawbone before an implant can be safely placed.
The grafting material can come from several sources. It can be taken from another area of your own body, from a sterilized human tissue bank (allograft), an animal source (xenograft), or it can be a completely synthetic bone substitute. We will discuss the best option for you.
No. The sinus lift only modifies the floor of the maxillary sinus to create bone depth for a dental implant. It does not affect your vocal cords, nasal passages, breathing, or facial appearance.
It depends on the amount of natural bone you currently have. If there is enough existing bone to stabilize the implant immediately, we may be able to perform the sinus lift and implant placement simultaneously. If the bone is very thin, we must wait for the graft to heal first.
You must avoid blowing your nose forcefully or sneezing violently for a few weeks, as this can dislodge the bone graft material or tear the stitches. We may provide saline sprays or decongestants to keep your nasal passages clear.
Success rates are very high. The main risk is the puncturing of the delicate sinus membrane during surgery, which we can usually repair immediately. Following all post-operative instructions, especially avoiding smoking, dramatically reduces the risk of failure.
