What is a Root Canal?

The Anatomy of a Root Canal

A root canal is a crucial endodontic procedure designed to save a tooth that is severely infected or badly decayed. Inside every tooth, beneath the hard enamel and dentin layers, lies a soft tissue called the pulp. This pulp contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue, which are essential for the tooth's growth and development. However, once a tooth is fully mature, it can survive without the pulp, receiving nourishment from the surrounding tissues. When this inner pulp becomes inflamed or infected due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures, faulty crowns, or a crack or chip in the tooth, it can cause excruciating pain and lead to an abscess if left untreated.

How We Save Your Natural Tooth

At Reform Dentistry, our root canal therapy involves carefully removing the infected or damaged pulp from the inner chambers of the tooth. By meticulously cleaning, disinfecting, and shaping the root canals, we eradicate the source of the infection and alleviate your discomfort. Once the space is thoroughly sterilized, it is filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha and sealed securely to prevent any future bacterial invasion. This process not only stops the spread of infection to neighboring teeth and bone but also allows you to keep your natural tooth.

Root Canals Are Not What You've Heard

Many patients fear root canals due to outdated misconceptions, but with today's advanced dental technologies and modern anesthetics, the procedure is highly effective and incredibly comfortable. In fact, most patients report that a root canal is no more uncomfortable than receiving a standard dental filling. Saving your natural tooth through a root canal is always our primary goal, as it maintains your natural smile, ensures proper chewing function, and prevents the cascade of complex dental issues that often follow tooth extraction. Trust our experienced team in Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania to provide gentle, expert care.

The Root Canal Process

1

Diagnosis and Anesthesia

We take precise digital x-rays to examine the root canals and determine the extent of the infection. Local anesthesia is administered to ensure the tooth and surrounding area are completely numb and comfortable.

2

Access and Cleaning

A small opening is created in the crown of the tooth. Specialized micro-instruments are used to carefully remove the infected pulp tissue and thoroughly clean and shape the inner root canals.

3

Filling and Sealing

Once cleaned and disinfected, the hollowed-out space is filled with a biocompatible rubber-like material (gutta-percha) and sealed with adhesive cement to prevent future bacterial penetration.

4

Restoration

A temporary filling is placed. After a short healing period, you will return to have a custom permanent crown placed over the tooth, restoring its full strength, function, and natural appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about root canal procedures.

Modern root canal treatments are virtually painless. With advanced anesthesia and techniques used at our Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania offices, the procedure feels similar to getting a routine filling. In fact, root canals relieve the intense pain caused by the infected tooth.

Most root canal treatments can be completed in one or two appointments, each lasting about 60 to 90 minutes. The exact duration depends on the specific tooth and the complexity of the root canal system.

Ignoring an infected tooth can lead to severe pain, abscesses, and the spread of infection to other parts of your body. Ultimately, the tooth may become unsalvageable and require extraction, which can necessitate more expensive replacements like dental implants.

In most cases, especially for molars and premolars that handle significant chewing forces, a dental crown is recommended after a root canal. The crown protects the weakened tooth structure and restores its full function and appearance.

You may experience mild sensitivity or discomfort for a few days following the procedure, especially when chewing. This is normal and can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. You can typically return to your normal activities the next day.

It's best to wait until the numbness wears off before eating to avoid biting your cheek or tongue. Try to chew on the opposite side of your mouth until the permanent restoration (like a crown) is placed to prevent damaging the temporary filling.

The cost varies depending on the tooth being treated and the complexity of the procedure. We offer transparent pricing and flexible payment plans, and we accept most major dental insurances at our Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania locations to help cover the costs.

Saving your natural tooth is almost always the preferred option. While extraction might seem like a quick fix, losing a tooth can lead to shifting of adjacent teeth, bone loss, and the need for costly replacements like implants or bridges. A root canal preserves your natural smile.
