Clear Aligners vs. Traditional Braces: Which Is Right for You?

Orthodontic treatment has come a long way. Today's patients can choose between traditional metal braces and clear aligner systems — and the right answer isn't the same for everyone.
Clear Aligners: Clear aligners (like ClearCorrect, which we offer at Reform Dentistry) use a series of custom-made, removable trays to gradually shift your teeth.
Advantages: - Nearly invisible - Removable — eat and drink whatever you want - Easier to clean your teeth - No wires or brackets to irritate your cheeks
Disadvantages: - Requires discipline — you must wear them 20–22 hours per day - Not ideal for complex bite corrections - Easy to lose the trays if you're not careful - Can be more expensive than braces in some cases
Traditional Braces: Metal or ceramic brackets bonded to your teeth with wires that are adjusted over time.
Advantages: - More effective for complex cases (severe crowding, significant bite issues) - You don't have to remember to wear them - Often more affordable for complex corrections
Disadvantages: - More visible - Dietary restrictions (no hard, sticky foods) - Harder to clean around - More office visits for adjustments
The best candidate for clear aligners: Adults and teens with mild to moderate crowding, spacing, or simple bite issues who are committed to wearing the trays consistently.
The best candidate for braces: Patients with more complex orthodontic needs, younger patients who might lose trays, or those who want a lower-touch treatment.
