How Long Do Dental Implants Last? Everything You Need to Know

Dental implants are the gold standard for tooth replacement — but patients often ask us: how long do they actually last?

The Short Answer: A Lifetime, With Proper Care

The titanium implant post itself — the part that fuses with your jawbone — is designed to last a lifetime. Clinical studies show that the vast majority of implants remain functional and structurally sound after 25+ years. The crown (the visible tooth portion) typically lasts 10–15 years before it may need replacement due to normal wear.

What Affects Implant Longevity?

Several factors influence how long your implant lasts:

Oral hygiene: Implants can't get cavities, but the gum and bone around them can still be affected by infection (called peri-implantitis). Brushing twice daily and flossing is essential.

Smoking: Smoking significantly reduces the success rate of implants by impairing healing and bone integration. Dr. Al-Douri strongly advises quitting before and after implant surgery.

Grinding (bruxism): Habitual teeth grinding puts excessive force on implants. A custom night guard can protect them.

Location in the mouth: Implants toward the back of the mouth experience more bite force, which can wear the crown faster.

How to Make Your Implant Last

- Brush at least twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush - Floss daily using implant-friendly floss or a water flosser - Attend every six-month cleaning — our hygienists use special tools that won't scratch implant surfaces - Avoid chewing ice, hard candies, or other extremely hard objects - Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth
