Conquering Dental Anxiety: 7 Tips From Our Fredericksburg Team

If going to the dentist makes you nervous, you are in very good company. Studies show that up to 36% of Americans experience dental anxiety, and about 12% have extreme dental phobia. At Reform Dentistry, we see anxious patients every single day — and we've gotten very good at helping them feel comfortable.

Here are seven practical strategies our team recommends.

1. Tell us you're anxious

This is the most important thing you can do. When you call to book your appointment, tell us. When you sit in the chair, tell your hygienist. We have protocols specifically for anxious patients — slower pacing, more frequent breaks, extra numbing time, and sedation options.

2. Choose morning appointments

Evening appointments give anxiety all day to build. A morning slot means less time to dwell. Many of our most anxious patients tell us this makes a significant difference.

3. Use the "stop signal"

Agree on a hand signal with your dentist before the procedure begins — raising your left hand means "stop." Knowing you have control over when we pause is surprisingly calming.

4. Bring headphones and music

Many patients completely tune out the sounds of the dental office with music or a podcast. We encourage it. The sounds of dental instruments are often more anxiety-provoking than the sensations.

5. Practice nasal breathing

Breathing slowly through your nose activates your parasympathetic nervous system and reduces anxiety. Some patients find it helpful to focus on their breath counting: inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 6.

6. Ask about inhalation sedation (nitrous oxide)

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is a safe, highly effective sedation option — it takes effect in minutes and wears off completely within minutes of removing the mask. There's no lingering grogginess and you can drive yourself home. For patients with mild to significant anxiety, inhalation sedation makes dental visits entirely manageable.

You deserve care that doesn't terrify you

Dental anxiety is real. It's not a character flaw, and you don't have to white-knuckle through it. Contact our Fredericksburg or Spotsylvania office to talk through your concerns — we'll find the right approach together.
