7 Signs You Might Need a Root Canal (Don't Ignore These)

Root canals are one of the most feared dental procedures — but they're also one of the most misunderstood. The truth: a root canal doesn't cause pain. It relieves it. The pain comes from the infection — the root canal takes it away.

More importantly, knowing when you need a root canal and acting quickly can be the difference between saving and losing a tooth.

What is a root canal?

A root canal removes infected or inflamed pulp from the inside of a tooth, cleans and seals the space, and protects the tooth with a crown. The goal is always to save the natural tooth.

7 warning signs you may need one:

1. Persistent, severe tooth pain Pain that doesn't go away — especially throbbing pain that wakes you up at night — is a red flag. Don't take painkillers and hope it resolves.

2. Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold Some sensitivity is normal. But if the pain lingers for more than 30 seconds after a sip of ice water or hot coffee, the nerve may be infected.

3. Darkening of the tooth When a tooth's internal tissue dies or gets infected, the tooth can take on a grayish or brownish discoloration. This is a sign the nerve is compromised.

4. Swollen, tender gums near the tooth Swelling, puffiness, or a small raised bump (like a pimple) on the gum near a tooth is often a sign of an abscess — a pocket of infection that needs immediate treatment.

5. Pain when biting or chewing Consistent pain whenever you put pressure on a tooth suggests the root may be infected or damaged.

6. A cracked or chipped tooth Cracks and chips can expose the pulp to bacteria, leading to infection. Even if you don't feel pain yet, a cracked tooth needs to be evaluated immediately.

7. A previous deep filling that's now painful Large fillings can weaken the tooth and allow bacteria to reach the pulp over time. If an old filling site suddenly becomes painful, it's time to see us.

The bottom line

Don't wait. A root canal that could have been a simple procedure becomes much more complex — and expensive — if the infection spreads to the jawbone. Call Reform Dentistry at (540) 307-1775 if you're experiencing any of these symptoms.
