Is Teeth Whitening Safe? What Dentists Want You to Know

Teeth whitening is one of the most requested cosmetic dental treatments — and one of the most misunderstood. Let's separate fact from fiction.

Is professional teeth whitening safe?

Yes — when performed or supervised by a dentist, teeth whitening is safe and effective. The active ingredient (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide) penetrates the enamel to break apart stain molecules. At professional concentrations, this is done under controlled conditions to minimize sensitivity.

What about store-bought strips and kits?

Over-the-counter products use much lower concentrations of whitening agents — which means they're safe, but also much less effective. Many patients use them for weeks with minimal results, then turn to us for professional treatment.

The real risk with OTC products is misuse — leaving strips on too long, using them on teeth with untreated cavities or gum disease, or using them too frequently. This can cause sensitivity, enamel erosion, and gum irritation.

Who should NOT whiten their teeth?

Whitening is not recommended for: - Pregnant or nursing women - Children under 16 (enamel is still developing) - Patients with untreated cavities or active gum disease - Patients with crowns or veneers (whitening won't change their color) - Those with extreme tooth sensitivity

What to expect from professional whitening at Reform Dentistry

We offer two options: in-office whitening (results in about an hour) and custom take-home trays. Both use professional-grade agents and come with our guidance on managing any temporary sensitivity.

Before we whiten your teeth, we always do a full exam to make sure your mouth is healthy enough for treatment. This is something no whitening kit can do.

The bottom line

Professional teeth whitening, supervised by a dentist, is one of the safest and most affordable cosmetic treatments available. If you want real results without damaging your enamel, call our Fredericksburg or Spotsylvania office to learn more.
